The list of albums created in basements is varied and notable. Bob Dylan and The Band’s The Basement Tapes, The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street, Outkast’s Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, and now we can add Marlaena Moore to the list.
Moore, an Edmonton-expat who now calls Montreal home, started laying the groundwork for her fourth album in collaborator Scotty “Monty” Munro’s parents’ basement. Finished in Montreal, the result is Because You Love Everything, a collection of big moods and exquisite music.

The indie-rocker’s soulful sound remains intact on the Because You Love Everything, with added quirks like the dusty, crackling electric guitar that kicks off album opener I Love Everything. Many of the album’s 10 tracks smoothly combine live instrumentation with lush synths to create a sonically intriguing listen.

“This album is a tribute to feeling completely lost as an artist and making art in spite of that,” Moore says in a press release. “Because You Love Everything is the hopeful reply to feeling lost.”

Moore’s lyrics tackle feelings of uncertainty and yearning. Slowburning album single Unfaded culminates in an aching chorus of “You are not alone anymore.” On Right To Your Love, Moore channels the vocals of Portisehead’s Beth Gibbons over chilly sonics. Album highlight Teething has Moore tackling a power imbalance she experienced in a previous relationship. The song centres on her heartbreaking vocals, singing about being weakened and drained while questioning the validity of the love.
Because You Love Everything is a compelling turn for Moore, whom fans have no doubt followed from her early days of folk-tinged indie rock to the musically-ambitious artist she has matured into. Listen to it on major streaming services.
Landon Bushell: Back in The Morning
Local singer-songwriter Landon Bushell has returned with a fresh EP. Bushell’s In This Moment was named by this column as one of the best local albums in 2022 and he’s continuing the winning streak with Back in the Morning. These four songs are breezy, funky little jams that will have you gazing outside at the snow and wishing for the speedy return of summer. The ukulele-driven I Don’t Know is the best of the bunch, full of hope and cathartic singing. Consider the EP an appetizer for more to come from Bushell.
